Recently at lilymccallin our customers are asking more and more discerning questions about our supply chain, they are asking for ethically sourced gemstones and Fairtrade gold.
So we have decided to write some blog posts covering some of the most common questions that we get asked.
Let’s start at the very beginning…
WHERE DO DIAMONDS COME FROM?
Diamonds are formed in the Earth’s mantle (the very core of the earth). In this immensely hot and pressurised environment , clear crystals are formed from carbon.
These crystals are brought to the earth’s surface in dramatic volcanic eruptions like you see in this picture.

It is possible to find diamonds in most countries that have experienced volcanic activity. They are also sometimes found on the floor of the ocean.
Although the first diamonds to be mined were in India over 2500 years ago, the majority of diamond mines today are found in Africa, Canada, Russia and Australia. Africa has the most diamond mines in the world.

Roughly 26,000 kg of diamonds are mined across Earth EVERY YEAR. That’s the equivalent of 2 of these elephants (plus two or three extra tusks).
